Today's Students - The Next Generation of Mariners and Maritime Leaders

A major challenge faced by America's maritime industry is how to attract the next generation of mariners and maritime leaders, who are critical to the future of not just the industry but the country itself. Today's students often consider careers in wellknown fields like medicine, finance, law or science. Few are even aware of the opportunities that exist in the maritime arena, both afloat and ashore. These opportunities range from vessel operation to managing fleet itineraries to positions in export and import trades ashore - all well-paying, career-focused jobs.

The Offering of a Specialized Maritime Curriculum

The Maritime Industries Academy High School in Baltimore is one of the few high schools in the country with the vision to offer a specialized maritime curriculum. The curriculum fosters interest in and appreciation of the industry as a career option and prepares students for trade or vocational school, college, or the maritime and naval academies. Building a strong cadre of deep sea, blue water, brown water and shoreside personnel strengthens both the industry and the country.
